Synopsis

The script follows novelist James Foster who is unsuccessfully trying to write his second book, spending time with his wife Em in a hotel complex on the island of La Tolqa. James and Em befriend a glamorous couple, Gabi and Alban Bauer, who take them on a picnic in the rural part of La Tolqa, off-limits to tourists. A perfect day turns into hell when James accidentally runs over and kills a local farmer on his way back to the hotel, committing a crime punishable by death. James’s fate is saved when he finds out about a legal loophole for tourists – the government of La Tolqa creates an exact copy of the criminal, his “doppelganger”, who suffers death on behalf of the perpetrator, for a significant sum. The surreal experience opens James to the world of reckless hedonism, bringing him closer to accomplices Gabi and Alban, and testing his relationship with Em. Immune to death or punishment, James’ behaviour gets out of control. The moment Gabi, Alban and their company turn against James, their reckless fun becomes a game of life and death.
